Screen printing is a multi-billion dollar contemporary industry that services both textiles and other industries. There are many ways to achieve a screen print ranging from basic diy through to state-of-the-art high-tech methods used to print on a multitude of surfaces and mediums. Of particular interest to textiles artists is the use of screen printing to create unusual repeat patterns using the screen as a vehicle to transfer new ink and dye products onto alternate surfaces, some of these products include thermo responsive inks which allow designs to change colour in response to changing body temperatures, electrically conductive inks used in Smart Textiles which can be utilized to control lights and sound built into clothing and light sensitive inks which change colour under different strengths of uv light
For this workshop we will achieve the basic technique to transfer a design onto a textile medium. We will discuss specialist products available on the contemporary market and investigate where to purchase them. We will explore the advantages and disadvantages of different textile inks in terms of environmental impact, design integrity and ease of printing.
We will achieve a printed design on a fabric surface.
